Should I use a local surveyor?
It's usually a good idea. The surveyor has to visit the property in person, and someone local is more likely to know the common building types and problems in the area. Whoever you choose, make sure they're regulated by RICS.
Which survey do I need?
It depends on the property. A Level 1 suits newer, conventional homes in good condition. A Level 2 is the most popular choice for standard homes, and a Level 3 is best for older, larger or altered properties.
Do survey costs vary by area?
Yes. Prices depend mainly on the property's value, size and the level of survey, but location plays a part too. Surveys in London and the South East usually cost more than in other parts of the UK.
